The longer version

About Alaa

Egyptian-born, Seattle-based. Father of three, diver, cook, podcaster, and serial wonderer. I believe life should be lived at full volume with occasional pauses for tea.

Alaa Badr

I grew up between Cairo and Alexandria, surrounded by family meals that lasted for hours, conversations that jumped between languages mid-sentence, and the particular kind of warmth that comes from a culture where hospitality isn't optional — it's the default setting.

By day, I work in technology, building things that (I hope) make people's lives a little easier. By evening, you might find me experimenting with a new spice blend, recording a podcast episode, planning the next dive trip, or reading something that has nothing to do with work.

I believe strongly in community, in showing up, and in the idea that the best version of yourself is the one that makes other people feel welcome. That's why I give khutbas, mentor younger professionals, and always keep extra chairs around the table.

"I collect experiences the way some people collect stamps — obsessively, joyfully, with no intention of stopping."

The Journey So Far

Childhood

Cairo & Alexandria

Split between the energy of Cairo and the calm of Alexandria's coast. Learned to swim, to cook, and to argue in at least two languages.

Education

Egypt

Studied technology and fell in love with how things work. Also fell in love with books, which was less career-practical but more soul-nourishing.

The Move

To the Pacific Northwest

Traded the Mediterranean for the Pacific. The rain was a shock. The coffee scene was a revelation.

Today

Seattle, WA

Building a life with my wife and three daughters. Working in tech, diving when I can, cooking constantly, and trying to deserve the good fortune.
